Terms of service
Written to be read. If something here is unclear, ask, and we will make it clearer.
1. Who you are agreeing with
Slowburn (the app, this website and the services behind them) is provided by Eriksen ENK, trading as Slowburn, a sole proprietorship (enkeltpersonforetak) registered in Norway, organisation number 937 027 834 (“we”). By installing or using Slowburn you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use it.
2. What Slowburn is
Slowburn is a reading journal. The journal lives on your phone. Optionally, you can create a circle to share chosen things with people you invite, and read a book together with one of them. Optionally, you can subscribe to Slowburn Premium. The features page describes what each part does; we may change, add or remove features over time, and we say what we are working on at Shape Slowburn.
3. Your journal, your content
Everything you write in Slowburn is yours. We claim no rights in it. Your journal is stored on your phone and we never receive it. What you choose to share with your circle is stored on our servers so we can deliver it to the people you chose, and only for that purpose; you give us the permission needed to do that, and nothing more. You are responsible for what you share.
4. Age
Slowburn is for adults and readers aged 16 and over. Romance includes books with explicit content, and the journal is built for readers of them.
5. The circle and the community rules
If you use the circle, Buddy Reads or Shape Slowburn, the community rules are part of these terms. They describe what is not allowed, what you can do about it, what we see when you report, what we do about it, and how to appeal. We may remove content, or suspend or permanently disable the community features of an account that breaks them. None of those actions touch your journal on your phone.
6. Accounts and sign-in
A circle is backed by an anonymous sign-in account created for you, which you can protect with Apple or Google so it survives a new phone. You are responsible for the device and sign-in you use. You can delete the circle and its sign-in account at any time in the app; here is how and what remains.
7. Premium
Slowburn Premium is an auto-renewing subscription, annual or monthly, sold through the Apple App Store or Google Play. The price is shown by the store in your local currency before you confirm; the amounts on our pricing page are reference prices in US dollars. Where a free trial is offered, the store tells you when it ends and what you will be charged; cancel before then and you pay nothing. Subscriptions renew until cancelled in the store’s subscription settings, and cancelling stops the next renewal while leaving the current period active. There is no lifetime plan. Refunds are handled by the store under its rules: see the refund policy.
What Premium includes is described on the features and pricing pages at the time you subscribe. We may improve Premium; we will not remove something you are paying for during a period you have paid for without a refund of that period.
8. Acceptable use
Do not use Slowburn to break the law, to harm or harass anyone, to impersonate anyone, to send spam, or to interfere with the service or other people’s use of it. Do not try to access other people’s data or our systems beyond the app’s ordinary use. Do not copy, resell or reverse-engineer the app except where the law allows it regardless of these terms.
9. Our content
The Slowburn name, the flame, the app’s design, its artwork and the articles on this site are ours or licensed to us. You may share the cards the app makes for you wherever you like; that is what they are for. Book titles, authors and metadata belong to their publishers and authors and are shown for identification.
10. What we do not promise
Slowburn is provided as it is. We work to keep it available and correct, but we do not promise it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any insight it draws from your journal is anything more than a calculation on what you wrote. Reading Identity, Compare and the Monthly Post-Mortem are descriptions of your reading, not assessments of you. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of Slowburn, and our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits rights that consumer law gives you and that cannot be limited.
11. Ending
You can stop using Slowburn at any time, delete your circle in the app, and erase the journal from your phone. We can end or suspend the community features of an account under the community rules, and we can end the service as a whole with reasonable notice, in which case a paid period we cannot honour is refunded.
12. Changes to these terms
If we change these terms in a way that matters, the app will tell you before the change applies, and continuing to use Slowburn afterwards means you accept it. The date at the top is the date of the current version.
13. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of Norway. If you are a consumer in the European Economic Area, you also keep the protection of the mandatory rules of the country you live in, and you may bring a dispute before the courts there. Disputes we cannot settle by talking are brought before the courts of Norway. Norwegian consumers may also contact Forbrukertilsynet.
